Mr Evans, Mr Thomas and Miss Hagerty of the History Department along with Mrs Arnott took 40 Year 8 pupils to Big Pit. Wizard of Oz 17/12/13 (42 images)

On Tuesday 17th December Absersychan Comprehensive School performed a pantomime version of a ‘Wizard of Oz’ at the fantastic venue, Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall. The show was watched by local primary schools during the day and was sold out for the evening performance. Dorothy was performed by the talented and dedicated Katie Hale and her sidekick Toto was played by the brilliant Thomas Mulcock. This pantomime version of a ‘Wizard of Oz’ had another lead called Billy Buttons who was played by the gifted Lewis Hancock, who got the crowd going and kept them entertained throughout. The soloists Megan Knight, Holly Jones, Kivelli Meadows, Lorna Symmonds, Maezy Walmsley, Alivia Yemm, Amelia Page, Grace Page, Bethan Cooke, Ellie Whittaker, Georgia Mai Clark and Holly Gardner were all outstanding helping to set the atmosphere and making the audience flow. The Wicked Witch who was played by Gabrielle Grimas was captivating and her voice was West End quality. In contrast to this wickedness, we had the elegant Glinda played by Georgia Young who suited the roll perfectly with her classiness. On the journey to the Emerald City we met the comical Lion played by Chloe McCarthy who was feisty and continuously made the audience laugh. Casey Baldwin played the Tin Man and Aimee Mayo played the Scarecrow and both of them suited their characters perfectly and played up to the audience, keeping them entertained. There were lots of comical jokes by the Dame played by Rachell Hicks who had the audience in stitches along with the trio Hewie, Dewie and Dave played by Alivia Yemm, Callum Smith and Ellie Whittaker. There was even a Danny Zuko who was played by the cool Alistair Henderson. He had lost his way with his crew but came on charming the Glinda Girls and the audience with his ‘How you doing?’. At the end, Mr Conway thanked the Performing Arts Department, staff of the school, Friends of Abersychan, parents, pupils and Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall for all their hard work and suppor

Monster Ball 2013 (12 images)

Abersychan School’s PTA Friends of Abersychan organised a Monster Ball for Years 7, 8 and 9 for the third year running. The Ball celebrates all things spooky as part of Halloween. This was our most successful Ball so far. Over 150 tickets were sold and our tuck shop was cleared! We made £200 for Friends of Abersychan. The money will go towards resources and equipment for the school to aid pupils’ learning. Pupils showed up in the craziest, scariest costumes to date. Our main hall was turned into a coven of ware wolves, vampires, zombies, witches, mummies and, of course, dead cheerleaders. Pupils enjoyed the most current pop tunes and really showed off their amazing dance skills. We had a pupil vote for Halloween King and Queen. The lucky winners this year were Callum Whittaker and Megan Mutlow. Staff voted for the best fancy dress and that prize went to Maddyson Field for her scary zombie face. All three pupils received a certificate and £5 Love to Shop voucher. The Friends of Abersychan and all staff would like to thank the pupils who attended for their excellent behaviour and, as always, parents and carers for helping pupils with their great costumes.

English - Year 8 Disaster Work (11 images)

Pupils in Year 8 have been studying a new topic throughout the summer term: Disaster! They have studied infamous disasters from the past and have learned about the difference between natural and man-made disasters. The events covered have included: Pompeii, The Great Fire of London, Titanic, The Hindenburg Disaster and Aberfan. Pupils have used their knowledge to create a news report based on Pompeii and an eye-witness’ letter based on The Hindenburg Disaster. Miss Rees’ group has produced memorial posters in memory of those who died at the Aberfan Disaster in 1966. Some of these have been uploaded for you to view.

History Trip to Big Pit 25/06/13 (6 images)

History Department visit to Big Pit – 25/6/13 Mr Evans and Mr Thomas of the History Department took 45 Year 8 pupils to Big Pit. The pupils had been studying the coal industry as part of their investigation to life in Wales during the industrial revolution, so this was an excellent opportunity to bring those studies to life. The pupils toured the drift mine and the pit baths before going underground to experience life as a miner. I think all agreed that working conditions for the miners were far from pleasant, apart from Josh Heward who would still like to be a coal miner and Naomi Taylor who would have liked to look after the pit ponies!. All of the pupils were glad to see the sun again and head to the miner’s canteen for a well-deserved lunch! Several members of the public also commented that the pupils were extremely well behaved and a real credit to the school.

Abersychan wins national community award (26 images)

On May 23rd 2013, five Year 10 pupils, Garin Scammell, Ffion Britton, Jessica Roberts, Regan Holmes and Lucy Day, accompanied Miss Rawles and Mr Conway to Covent Garden, London to collect a national award for exemplary work in the school and the local community. The award sponsored by the organisation “Give More” was in recognition of the hours of service that Abersychan pupils contribute to help fellow pupils, the local community and wider charities. In addition to receiving a certificate, the pupils accepted a cheque for £500 for a charity of their choice, which in this case will be Velindre Hospital. Many thanks to Mrs Jay for proposing our pupils for this award.

Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition 2013 (70 images)

Congratulations to the 23 Year 11 pupils who participated in the Duke of Expedition Qualifying walk last weekend. Pupils were dropped off in Lower Redbrook and in groups of six they walked along a pre-planned route to Biblins Adventure Centre where they camped overnight. The pupils cooked their own meals and then walked to the finish at Kerne Bridge the next day. All pupils managed to successfully navigate the route and were commended by the assessor for their knowledge. Thankfully, the weather was much better than on their practice walk two weeks earlier where pupils had to endure persistent rain throughout the weekend. The only thing that the pupils need to do now to gain their Bronze Award is to make their presentations next week. Well done Year 11.

Ski Trip 2013 (45 images)

This Easter we took 37 pupils to Flachau in Austria on a Ski and Snowboard trip. The conditions were excellent and we were lucky enough to have fresh snow while we were there. The pupils enjoyed skiing and snowboarding every day and managed to complete the whole week without a single injury! The evenings were also filled with activities from swimming to karaoke……if they could prise the microphone out of Mr Watkins’s hands! Letters will be out soon for next years trip!
