Mathematics and Numeracy

At Abersychan School, we aim to nurture students to be confident, inquisitive and resilient with regards to Mathematics, viewing numeracy as both an essential life skill, and a lens through which to understand the world. Our pedagogical approaches highlight the logic and creativity of Mathematics, in both theoretical and practical contexts.

Students engage with mathematical ideas through ‘Mastery’ techniques, discovering how Mathematics underpins everyday life; from architecture and art, to finance and technology. They build a strong foundation across five key proficiencies: conceptual understanding, symbolic communication, fluency, logical reasoning and strategic thinking.

From the beginning, students are encouraged to solve problems, explore concepts and collaborate with others. As they advance, they develop metacognitive strategies, strengthen their resilience, are challenged to think critically, justify their reasoning and apply their knowledge in diverse situations. Our curriculum promotes risk-taking, experimentation and perseverance.

Students also gain practical skills in managing finances, assessing risk and becoming discerning consumers. We work closely with our cluster primary schools to ensure a smooth transition in learning and pedagogy, and our collaboration with consortium partners has been recognised by Estyn as sector leading.
