Humanities
At Abersychan School, Humanities takes students on a journey through time, place and belief to better understand the human experience. Rooted in the Curriculum for Wales, our approach fosters curiosity, imagination and a deep sense of connection to the world around us.
Through Geography, History and Religion, Values & Ethics (RVE), students explore local, national and global contexts. They investigate how people, cultures, environments and economies interact, and how Wales fits into a wider global narrative. Themes such as sustainability, social justice and cultural diversity encourage students to reflect on their own values, and those of others.
Our curriculum nurtures ethical, informed citizens who can express their views with confidence and respect. Students critically examine religious and non-religious worldviews, engage with ethical dilemmas and consider how they can contribute to a fairer, more inclusive society.
Learning is enquiry-driven and extends beyond the classroom. Students evaluate evidence, communicate ideas and develop independence and resilience. In Year 7, the theme ‘Our Wales’ explores local history, Welsh geography and religious heritage. Year 8 focuses on equality, examining civil rights movements, global inequality and the values of different faiths. Year 9 explores conflict, from the impact of World War I to natural disasters and religious persecution, including a study of the Holocaust.
Humanities at Abersychan is more than academic study; it’s a foundation for thoughtful, active citizenship in Wales and the wider world.
